Why Suneel and Deirdre Kamlani Are Leaving a Gift in Their Will to Greenwich Hospital

Suneel and Deirdre Kamlani

The Kamlani family has four terrific reasons to be grateful to Greenwich Hospital, a Yale New Haven Health System hospital. “In each of the last four decades,” Deirdre says, “the hospital has saved the life of one of our parents.”

It all goes back to the late 1980s, when Suneel’s father was hospitalized with a serious case of pneumonia. “It was our family’s first experience with Greenwich Hospital,” says Suneel. “We were incredibly impressed.”

Suneel’s father recovered well and went on to live a long, healthy life—and he never forgot the “excellence of care and the calm approach” taken by the caregivers who saved his life.

Suneel’s mother had a similar but even more serious experience a few years later. Thanks to that same excellent quality of care, she too made a full recovery.

“To this day, she still comments about how fortunate we are to live in a town with such a remarkable hospital,” says Suneel.

Deirdre’s father was visiting in 2001 when he took a bad fall, suffering a brain hemorrhage due to a prescribed blood thinner. It was frightening, but after the physicians at Greenwich Hospital carefully weaned him off the blood thinner and stopped the bleeding, he too made a full recovery.

Then, just a few years ago in 2018, Deirdre’s mother was rushed to a New York City hospital with a ruptured appendix. Shockingly, there were no surgeons or operating rooms available. Desperate for help, Deirdre called Greenwich Hospital—and she was amazed at their immediate willingness to take over her mother’s case.

Athanassios Petrotos, MD, a general surgeon at Greenwich Hospital, consulted by phone with the doctors who were monitoring Deirdre’s mother in New York. He quickly determined that surgery was needed as soon as possible. After a speedy trip by ambulance from New York to Greenwich, she was taken into surgery right away.

“A few months later,” Deirdre recalls, “she was back on the golf course!”

Suneel and Deirdre wanted to show their profound appreciation and gratitude for the care their parents received over the years, so they decided to leave a gift in their will to Greenwich Hospital.

“While the hospital has continued to grow and modernize over time,” says Suneel, “the culture has remained exactly the same—dedicated to medical excellence and maintaining a calm, reassuring approach.”

Suneel and Deirdre know that maintaining that exceptional care and compassionate culture depends on the generosity of forward-thinking donors. They are proud to be a part of Greenwich Hospital’s future.
