Longtime Supporter Norman Marieb, MD, Makes Simple Gift to Benefit the Future of the Hospital

Photo of Norman Marieb, MDAfter 57 years of experience with YNHH, he’s an expert on why it’s so fulfilling to be a donor

If you’ve ever wondered whether a donation to Yale New Haven Hospital is a good investment, Norman Marieb can tell you. His many decades of association with the hospital—both the York street campus and the Saint Raphael campus—have made him deeply familiar with the outstanding quality of expertise and compassion our patients depend on.

Norm came to the Hospital of Saint Raphael (now part of Yale New Haven Hospital) in 1961 to continue his training with a fellowship in metabolism after completing medical school. He’s been connected to YNHH as a physician, professor, administrator, or patient ever since. He’s seen the organization from every possible perspective, and he believes YNHH needs and deserves his philanthropy.

A clever (and painless!) way to make a generous gift

Not long ago, Norm found a way to make an extra gift to the hospital—he donated a life insurance policy that he no longer needs. It cost him nothing out-of-pocket, yet someday, when the policy is paid out, it will mean so much to us at YNHH.

“It may seem like a small amount compared to what they need,” says Norm, “but since many hospitals around the region are closing right now, the need is there. And I know it will make a difference.”

A YNHH medical career with many hats

Although he hasn’t fully retired yet, Norm looks back on his medical career with great satisfaction. “I enjoyed the daily challenge of patient care,” he says, “and teaching most of all.”

Norm’s colleagues, students, and patients clearly felt the same way about him—he received numerous awards for teaching and physician excellence from the medical staffs at both Yale New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of Saint Raphael over the course of his long career, including the 2010 Verdi Award for “significant clinical contributions to the hospital and its patients.” He was also elected a Master to the American College of Physicians in 2010.

After completing his fellowship, Norm entered into private practice in endocrinology in Orange, Connecticut. When his patients needed hospitalization, he treated them at YNHH or the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Over the next 50 years Norm held a variety of professional roles, all connected to the Hospital of Saint Raphael or YNHH—physician, two stints as chief of medicine, chief operating officer, and full clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine. He and his family received most of their medical care at YNHH.

The Marieb family has donated to the hospital’s Annual Fund every year for many years, and there are many reasons why. “YNHH is one of the top hospitals in the country—they’re really at the cutting edge in so many specialties,” he says. “And they do an awful lot for the community and the under-served. That combination makes it important for us to do something for them.”

There are many ways to give to YNHH that don’t require you to give cash out-of-pocket during your lifetime.
