Lorraine D. Cronin was well known for her philanthropic support throughout the greater New Haven community. She was active with many organizations, but her generosity is most evident on the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. She first became involved with the hospital in the late seventies when she joined the Auxiliary of the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Lorraine, along with her late husband, Dr. Robert J. Cronin, made a number of substantial gifts over the past 36 years including legacy gifts as part of her charitable action plan. The Cronin name is widely visible throughout the Saint Raphael Campus including on a pedestrian bridge connecting the Orchard Street parking garage and the medical center, in the Grimes Center’s chapel, and in the hospital’s auditorium. She also provided funds to help establish the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care.

Most recently, Lorraine was at the forefront of those supporting the new Musculoskeletal Center located on the Saint Raphael Campus. She made an inaugural gift that enabled the renovation of the new Dr. Robert J. & Lorraine D. Cronin Musculoskeletal Unit.

Not satisfied to limit her giving to her lifetime, Lorraine also established a charitable gift annuity that provided her income for life. A good portion of the annual income she received from the gift annuity, about 80%, was tax-free. Since her passing, the remainder is being used to support the hospital. She also named the hospital as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy and included the hospital in her will. Lorraine’s legacy of giving will continue well into the future.
